CURRICULUM FOR EXCELLENCE: THE SCHOLAR 10TH ANNIVERSARY CONFERENCE

Curriculum for Excellence in the classroom was the theme for the 10th annual SCHOLAR Conference at Heriot-Watt University.

The Conference addressed over 200 Scottish teachers on how online teaching and learning through the SCHOLAR programme can support Curriculum for Excellence.

The conference was addressed by Peter McNaughton, Assistant Chief Inspector of HM Inspectorate of Education, and Martin Ripley from the 21st Century Learning Alliance. A further discussion on Curriculum for Excellence was led by the SCHOLAR national co-ordinator, Jim McGill after delegates watched brief videos of lessons by Margaret Ferguson of Hermitage Academy and Carole Graham  from Tynecastle High School.

Professor Phillip John, Dean of Science and Engineering at Heriot-Watt University and Executive Chair of the SCHOLAR Forum, said: “The hot topic in the education sector at the moment is undoubtedly the implementation of Curriculum for Excellence and we want to provide SCHOLAR users with full information on how online teaching and learning can assist with planned developments in the classroom.

SCHOLAR Conference Tables and Stage

"The annual conference is increasingly popular with teachers keen to learn about recent innovations with digital learning and, this year, they will be introduced to our most recent advance:- how 3D technology can assist with teaching and learning science subjects.
Teachers will experience the innovative use of 3D technology in the classroom for Biology and Chemistry, and also receive an introductory online lesson in the Gaelic language from Gerry Toner; illustrating the use of new technology to support minority subjects."

The annual SCHOLAR conference took place at Heriot-Watt University’s Edinburgh campus on Friday, 18th June 2010.
